Industrial Minerals Magazine, Atritor Dryer - Deagglomerator Series

Atritor Ltd. Of Coventry England are introducing a new range of Atritor Dryer-Pulverisers - the 'B' Series - based on the highly successful 'A' Series, introduced 77 years ago as a robust dryer-pulveriser for direct firing Pulverised Fuel from a moist raw coal feed, into kilns, calciners and boilers.

The new 'B' Series will be aimed more at drying and de-agglomeration of high-evaporation filter cakes or back-mixed slurries such as PCC and a variety of wet milled minerals, ceramics, pigments etc. where final particle size is dependent more on energy input than on the milling of primary particles.

The driving force behind this development is the continuing success   of  the  'A'  Series  in  a
wider scope of applications, balanced against customer requests for improved features such as; a lighter fabricated body - the 'A' Series features a heavy cast body casing with special hardened steel grinding internals; a stainless steel contact parts option; higher potential hot air flows, by around 50%, for greater drying capacity; and, of course, price - the new 'B' series Atritors will run out at around 60% of the original 'A' Series price  (Bare shaft machine).

The Atritor Dryer-Pulveriser is a back fed, horizontal shaft unit with a highly turbulent product path culminating in a basic classification stage before product / air exit at the front of the machine. Sizes run from the 7.5kW '4B' to the 250kW (max) '20B' representing an evaporative capacity of between 100 and 6000 kg/h of water with air-flows up to 50,000m3/h. In line with their   general    "Close    to    the

Customer" policy, Atritor custom designs machines and processes for specific applications which, says new sales director George Milburn, is the hallmark of survival for a small company and played an important role in the development of our Cell Mill, 'CM' Series, in close association with a major world player in the fine carbonates market.

Cell Mills feature as downstream operations on some 'A' Series plant for ultra-fine de-agglomeration and simultaneous coating with Stearates for example. The Cell Mill, also a Dryer-De-agglomerator in its own right, capable of producing extremely     fine    ( d98  < 2µm )
products from slurries, filter cakes etc, is avertical shaft multi-rotor unit available with optional integral classifier and rotor powers up to 350kW.

Having enjoyed a long period of quiet success Atritor is now committed to a determined policy of growth, both by expansion of existing operations and by acquisition. To help realise this, Chairman Seb Rosin, former director of GEA's Barr-Rosin, has allocated considerable investment towards expansion of the existing test facilities and recruitment of additional engineering personnel both in Projects and Sales.

Atritor will continue to offer a global design, build, installation and commissioning service with good spares and service backup combined with the flexibility of co-operation arrangements with Turnkey Project Management Companies such as IVA GmbH who are able to offer complete scope of supply from Quarry and Mine to Product Marketing Services.

Other machines available include Fluid Energy Mills of both the Spiral (pancake) and Direct Opposed Jet types supplied to a wide industrial base including Minerals, Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals, Food and Pigments.

The Atritor typical scope of supply include:
