Atritor Limited was selected as the supplier of the fuel preparation plant for the GEM converter at the WTE facility of Scarborough Power at Seamer Carr.

FUEL preparation involves the drying and fine shredding of the organic fractions of segregated household waste from the Wastec system.

Atritor is supplying an AST drying system; this is an air-swept flash dryer with high thermal efficiency and, in this instance, it utilises a low oxygen hot gas stream to ensure safe drying of the organics. Inside the dryer drum is an internal agitator/rotor   which   shreds   the

material whilst it is dried. The dry product contains less than 8% moisture and is fibrous in nature with a high specific surface, ideal for conversion with GEM technology. The system has been integrated to take the low oxygen exhaust gases from the Edina engines to provide the thermal energy for drying the material, negating the need for premium fuels.

The dried product is consistent in both moisture content and form, despite seasonal fluctuations in the moisture content and make-up of the organic waste  fraction.

The AST dryer has the added benefit of being able to remove a significant proportion of the residual inorganic fraction remaining after any sorting system, thus improving the quality of the  material  as a  fuel.

The dryer for the Seamar Carr project is one metre in diameter and is sized to evaporate 1000kg/hour of water. Atritor provides a large choice of AST dryers ranging from 300 mm to 2.5 metres in diameter and with evaporation   rates   from    250kg/hour    to10000   kg/hour  of   water.

Atritor has worked for many years with GEM on pilot trials and was pleased to be chosen to provide the drying technology on the first commercial system on household waste. Atritor is currently providing another fuel preparation plant for a major industrial WTE project in the UK. Since the 1920s Atritor has been involved in fuel preparation plant with a world-wide customer base and has a long history of providing efficient and safe systems for the processing of organic materials. Atritor manufactures and supplies equipment to a wide spectrum of industries and has a diverse range of drying and milling systems to suit different applications. The Company is privately owned, located in Coventry, with offices, a pilot plant, an alloyed iron foundry and a machine shop, employing a total of 40 personnel.
