The production of attrition dried casein and the conversion of casein to caseinate.

Conversion of casein into caseinate

The concept of injecting additives directly into the mill to modify the material being processed is not new to Atritor. We have supplied many systems into the minerals industry, e.g coating precipitated calcium carbonate with stearates etc. We also have a patented nozzle for feeding slurry 80% liquid directly into the mill chamber and injecting a stearate separately for particle coating. It is this expertise and technology that we have applied to the dairy industry to simultaneously mill, dry and convert wet curd to caseinate by the addition of sodium salts and other additives.

The process flow is the same as the previous diagram except for the addition of a second powder or liquid feeder to meter the additive via a venturi device directly into the mill chamber.

We have now carried out a number of trials for different dairy companies and demonstrated this to be a viable process.

The picture shows the CM 1500 Cell Mill capable of producing 700kg/h of product at 10% moisture from wet curd at 50% moisture with an inlet temperature of 160°C.
